Beginners Learn to Quilt Class

Learn the Basics of Quilting with a Fun Easy Baby Quilt

Joan Lailey and Barb Segal will lead you through every step in completing your project during 3 days of instruction.  We can help anyone.  One of us has even taught a blind 14-year-old boy to sew. You will be making a beautiful scrappy quilt about 36x35 inches. Variety is the zest for life and for this quilt.  Every quilt made in the class will be unique.

Each day will consist of 4 hours instruction with a half hour for lunch.  Instruction will begin at 10:30 AM so you should have your machine set up by that time.  At 3PM you may choose to pack up and take your work home or stay for a little more help.  We will stay as needed.

We absolutely love quilting and hope you will too.

Class goals: Have fun learning some new skills. Finish your project successfully.

What you will learn:

• Setting up your machine for success: threading, tension, stitch length, accessories and maintenance

• ¼ inch vs scant ¼ inch seams

• Introduction to colour theory and choosing your fabrics

• Pressing

• Cutting with rotary cutters and quilting rulers safely

• Planning your quilts and finding the block in quilts that you like

• Sandwiching your quilt, quilting and binding it.

• Labelling a quilt and adding a sleeve

• Resources for more quilting ideas, help and projects.

Cost: $85 plus GST for guild members

Quilted Jacket Class with Terry Rowland

Feb 7-8, 2025 Registration open now!

In this two day class, Terry will lead us through making a quilted jacket. The class is open only to guild members until Jan 10, 2025, then we will open to the public. This is the first time Terry has taught this class so we expect the demand to be high.

Location: Gaetz United Church

Cost: $110 for members plus supplies until Jan 10, 2025

and $150 for non-members after Jan 10, 2025 (GST included) plus supplies

Time: 9:00 AM till 4:00 PM each day

Beginners’ Quilting Class

Fat Quarter Days

Friday March 7 - KIT DAY

Miniature Wall Hanging

 Using the most basic units, the square, rectangle and four patch, sew this little kit in a day!! Your mini can be scrappy or colour coordinated (some people use scraps from a certain large project). You should bring your pieces cut and/or use some of mine. Then after a brief overview, we’ll get right to sewing. I’ll share with you the many things I’ve learned making tiny quilts. We’ll have lunch and continue with some finishing ideas.  You might go home with a little quilt top – the perfect KIT DAY.

Saturday March 8 – Coloured Pencils

Using pencil crayons to create blocks or add interest to your blocks.  

Lynn Fjellstrom will show us how to use coloured pencils on our projects.

Care Quilting

This group meets twice a month (second and fourth Wednesday of each month) and is always looking for helpers to quilt the quilt sandwiches they prepare.  If you are interested in contributing to the objective of the guild in this way, please reach out to Elaine Coumont.
